En los modelos de 4 y 5 componentes cada componente se calcula por separado. En algunos casos en el modelo de 4 componentes sólo se calcula la masa grasa, la masa residual y la masa ósea, la masa muscular se calcula por sustracción, es decir, que lo que no es grasa, masa residual ni masa ósea, es músculo. En cambio, en el modelo de 5 componentes es el único método antropométrico validado a partir de la disección de cadáveres, lo que lo hace mucho más preciso.
Modelo de cuatro componentesTambién llamados modelos cineantropométricos, son métodos más modernos que el de doble compartimento para la estimación de la composición corporal en donde la masa libre de grasa se divide en masa ósea, masa visceral y masa muscular, sin embargo en varios estudios se observaron grandes diferencias entre los datos calculados y los datos reales, además de que la estimación del porcentaje de la masa ósea y la masa grasa, se calculan con un numero restringido de variables antropométricas y peor aún, es que la masa muscular muchas veces se obtiene por diferenciación de lo que resulta entre la masa total, menos las masas ósea, masa grasa y masa visceral, no tomando en cuenta ni una sola medición antropométrica para valorarla, suponiendo que todo lo que no sea grasa, vísceras y hueso, es músculo.
Ventajas:A diferencia del modelo anterior, este modelo toma también en cuenta la piel como otro componente corporal. Además de que se autoevalúa debido a que la suma de todos los elementos (peso estructurado) debe ser igual al peso real de la persona. Aunque eso es algo que nunca ocurre, se toma como rango de error una diferencia de ± 5% para que se considere aceptable esta estimación. Sin duda este método es el más confiable de los tres ya que se ha medido la exactitud en varios estudios, reflejando un mayor apego a la realidad, además que es el único método antropométrico validado a partir de la disección de cadáveres.
Otro punto importante para considerar es que, en el modelo de 5 componentes no se calcula el % de grasa sino el % de adiposidad. Para explicarlo de manera simple se pudiera decir que la grasa es simplemente la fracción lipídica contenida dentro del adipocito, mientras que la adiposidad sería la fracción lipídica más las células adiposas que están compuestas por la fracción lipídica, agua, minerales, proteínas, etc. Por lo tanto el % de grasa no es intercambiable por el % de adiposidad, siendo este último entre un 5% a 10% más elevado por lo antes mencionado.
