Es en el sistema digestivo donde se sintetiza el 95% de la serotonina del cuerpo, mejor conocida como la hormona de la felicidad, precedida por el triptófano de la dieta y la microbiota.
La mayoría de los antidepresivos tienen como principal función aumentar la producción de dicha la serotonina, además de que se ha demostrado la correlación que existe en diferentes enfermedades como el síndrome del intestino irritable, ansiedad, depresión y síndrome de fatiga crónica, entre otros.
Ted Dinan, psiquiatra Irlandés y su equipo, acuñó el término Psicobióticos a los “organismos vivos que al ser ingeridos en cantidades adecuadas produce beneficios en la salud de pacientes que sufren enfermedades psiquiátricas”, haciendo dichas pruebas en modelos animales, encontrando que la administración de psicobióticos secretan altas cantidades de GABA (ácido gamma-aminobutírico), principal neurotransmisor inhibidor y relajante del sistema nervioso y todo esto dado a la relación bidireccional del eje microbiota-intestino-cerebro, lo que sucede en el cerebro va a influir en el intestino y por la tanto también a la microbiota.
Esto sugiere que la modificación de microbioma aliviaría padecimientos emocionales puesto que los psicobióticos contienen otras cepas de bacterias capaces de modificar la función de la corteza suprarrenal, donde se produce casi el 95% del cortisol de nuestro organismo, una hormona que aumenta el nivel de estrés y ansiedad en el cuerpo
Los ensayos clínicos concluyen que los psicobióticos resultan beneficiosos como tratamiento complementario en algunos trastornos psicológicos en la disminución del estrés y en la ansiedad en particular las cepas como el Lactobacillus helveticus y Bifdobacterium longum que mejoran el autocontrol emocional, alivia la depresión y la cepa Bifidobacterium infantis o Lactobacillus rhamnosus, modifica con su ingesta la bioquímica cerebral disminuyendo la angustia psicológica.
Estimulamos el adecuado funcionamiento de los psicobióticos al reducir la ingesta de grasas saturadas y alimentos altos en azúcar, además de incluir en nuestra dieta alimentos fermentados en la dieta cotidiana.
